Helpful in success (project support) – The Wadi project of NABARD helped a lot in getting rid of the above challenges, such as availability of resources (water , plants , manure , seeds and training) from the Wadi project, scientifically in the use of natural resources. Along with this, the awareness has increased and the trend of planting saplings has increased, due to which the role of the villager has been ensured even in the important subject like environment . Due to the knowledge of the advanced techniques of agriculture through training in the project, along with the increase in agricultural production, the interest of farmers has increased in the production of new crops, inter-cropping, besides paddy . Collective farming , collective irrigation , collective fencing and the tendency to do collective work are the special achievements of this project . The project of NABARD’s PFO has promoted the trend of realization of the right price , right transaction , mass procurement and production of the products . This has also paved the way for freedom from middlemen .

Cold Storage

Introduction:

In terms of production of Fruits and Vegetables India is second largest in the world. As per a study done by Saumitra Chaudhuri Committee on Nov 2012, nearly 18-20 % of the total produce of perishable product is wasted due to improper infrastructure facility post-harvest.

Loss of fresh forest and farm produce due to inadequate storage facility is a major issue faced by the farmers in India. Due to poor facility for storage the farmers have to compromise with their profit margin and have to sell their product during the peak season when the cost is low.

Same issue is faced by the tribal community farmers in the Kartala block in Korba ,Chattishgarh. In this area variety of perishable farm and forest product are available in large quantity during the peak season. Due to unavailability of proper post-harvest storage infrastructure farmers are not able to regulate their supply as per market dynamics resulting in distress sale of product which is leading to lower profit margin.

After talking with the local farmer’s community and other local organizations working closely with the Farmers Producer Organization (FPOs) Environics Trust worked to established 5MT cold storage model to overcome this problem and simultaneously developing self-sustainable business model for the FPO.

The Cold Storage is installed in village Nawapara at Gram Bhatori Vikas Sansthan Samiti (GBVSS) campus. GBVSS is an organization that closely work with 4 FPO namely Mahmaya,Haryali,Chanderwansi & Jaigurudev. GBVSS is supported by NABARD. These FPOs constitute a total of 2000 numbers of farmers with about 2000 acres of land. The GBVSS campus is centrally located which is easily accessible by the farmers.

The objective of Environics Trust is to help the farmers to bring greater value to their products, minimize the loss of product and to develop a self-sustainable livelihood model for the local tribal farmer community.

Major Issues:

Maintaining the temperature is the most important aspect in post- harvest handling of perishable forest and farm produce. Due to improper facility these major problem were faced by the farmers of the tribal community

  • Loss of considerable amount of share of their products due to physiological changes that occur due to inability to control the temperature of storage.
  • Unsteady availability of product for longer time period
  • Forced to sell their product during peak season when the supply is more with respect to the demand of the product leading in lower profit margin.
  • Cold storage are located quite far and the cost is quite high because access is through middleman.

Benefits of the Project:

The cold storage was commissioned on the date 18-12-2021. As per the objective nearly 110 farmers form the FPOs are using this cold storage for storing Vegetables, Jamun , Potato ,Sesame, Black Rice, Mango, Mahua etc.

Farmers are quite intrigued by this cold storage and are using it actively to store their produce. Monthly utilization of Cold Storage by the farmers in terms of weight of material stored.

The major benefits of the cold storage after usage of almost 16 month of usage:

  • Due to cold storage the product can stay fresh for longer period of time as lower temperature leads to delayed physiological changes in the product due to which help to keep product in proper shape and form.
  • Farmers are able to regulate the supply as per market trend.
  • Due to cold storage steady availability of product for longer time is ensured.
  • Due to cold storage farmers are looking to process their produce as now they can store it for longer duration. This will help them to get better revenue from their produce.
  • Cold storage direct and easy access helping the farmers to avoid middleman and get better profit.
  • Cold storage is a self-sustainable business model which is evident form the fact that Mahamaya FPO has generated a revenue of around Sixty Six thousand rupees form the Cold storage in the past 16 month.
  • Cold storage is also being utilized by FPO for storage of mother culture for use in producing bio fertilizer and pesticides.

Way Ahead:

On analyzing the production capacity of the area and keeping in mind the outcome of the above mentioned project. There is a need of more self-sustainable standalone solar powered cold storage unit to provide benefits to more numbers of farmers and help them to get best value of their products.
